Expansion of Gambling Sites
Posted in Gambling NewsLobbyists who support the expansion of Kentucky gambling sites gave legislators a record sum in campaign contributions in recent months.
From October to December 2005, advocates for expanded gambling sites in Kentucky gave members of the state legislature $81,000.
The donations were given in advance of a proposed bill to allow casino gambling sites at existing racetracks.
Many legislators said that, despite the big payments distributed by those who advocate expanded gambling sites in Kentucky, their stance on the issue will not be swayed. Senator David Williams, a Republican from Burkesville who is also Senate president, said, “I’m not for the expansion of gambling and I’m not going to be for the expansion of gambling.”
Six lawmakers returned the contributions from the lobbyists for gambling sites. Sen. Katie Stine, R-Southgate, gave back $1,000. Rep. Joe Bowen, R-Owensboro; Rep. Jim Wayne, D-Louisville; Rep. Rick Nelson, D-Middlesboro; Rep. Mike Denham, D-Maysville; and Rep. Adrian Arnold, D-Mount Sterling, each returned a check worth $500.
Legislators who support expanded gambling sites in Kentucky are generally divided among party lines, with Republicans against and Democrats in support of the proposed gambling sites.
The governor of Kentucky, who is a Republican, does not support the enlarging of gambling sites, which leaves pro- gambling Democrats out on something of a political limb.
