After the Oscars last night, thousands of users of internet gambling sites are counting their winnings or mourning their losses. This year’s Oscars ceremony was one of the most bet- upon non- sports- related event on hundreds of internet gambling sites.
Terri Lanch, 31, held an Oscar- watching party for her friends in her Hoboken apartment. She estimates that about half of the 14 friends, 10 of them women, that came to the party had money riding on the event at internet gambling sites.
Lanch, who is a financial analyst in New York City, said that neither she nor her friends bet large amounts of money on the event.
“We like to keep it light and fun- I think the most heavy- rolling of my friends didn’t even bet more than a total of $200. That way, nobody is too bummed afterward to enjoy the party.â€
Lanch herself put $50 on Reese Witherspoon for best actress, $50 on Katherine Keeter for best supporting actress, and $75 Ang Lee to win best director.
The profile of the typical internet gambling sites user differs from that of, say, bettors on internet football games. Entertainment event bettors tend to be less serious than their sporting counterparts, to bet less money, and to bet more on the underdog.
